Graystone Farm is situated in central Alberta, on a 100-acre plot of land. Set amongst rolling hills with the majestic Canadian Rockies rising in the background, Graystone is the ideal setting for horse ownership.
On the acreage sits two, 50-stall horse barns and an impressive stone-fronted house. Spanning the remaining land are acres and acres of lush turnout space, and a well maintained one-mile racetrack. The footing of this track is composed of sand, dirt and the mulched remains of daily stall cleanings. Yes, we believe in recycling. As a result, the footing of the track is one of the best in the area. It provides a firm surface to run on (even in the wet season), while remaining forgiving enough to preserve a Thoroughbred's delicate legs.
Our horses are our business, but also our family. The horses housed on the property are trained individually and at their own unique pace, and given a minimum of one day per week free from training. Each horse is turned out to relax every Sunday, which we feel preserves their bodies and keeps them keen. "A rested horse is a happy horse", we always say, "and a happy horse is a winning horse".
When racing a horse, we carefully consider its capabilities. Our horses are raced on a schedule that we feel is conducive to their well-being, and we understand that not all horses can withstand a heavy campaign. Our two year olds are gently eased into track life, racing once per month at shorter distances, until we can be sure they are ready to advance. As a general rule, we don't even begin racing our horses until the middle of their two year old season. We give them time to grow into themselves, which benefits them in the future. As they grow older, they are adjusted into a heavier racing schedule, but even then, most of our horses never see more than two races per month.
With that, we invite you to tour our farm website and visit with our horses. Feel free to contact us with any questions you may have.
